Slovenia Put an End to Scotland's World Cup Dreams

The home side pipped Scotland for second place behind group winners England after the Scots could only draw 2-2 away to Slovenia.

Scotland now lie second in Group F and a win should assure them of a play-off spot for the World Cup.

Half-time substitute Roman Bezjak scored twice to deny the visitors the three points they required to book a play-off berth.

But if they draw they will be eliminated either by virtue of being overtaken by Slovakia or by finishing as the worst second placed team.

The best eight of the nine World Cup qualification group runners-up will get a play-off position.

'The Scotland campaign was lost because of Gordon Strachan and his team selection in the early games, ' Sutton tweeted. Instead Scotland head into their final group game with 17 points and a manager still hopeful of leading his team to Russian Federation and their first World Cup for 20 years.
