Volunteers near and far donate blood in wake of Las Vegas shooting

Virginia Blood Services says it has shipped blood to Las Vegas-area hospitals to help those in need after Sunday night's deadly shooting.

Boulder's Bonfils center is located at 3113 28th St.

"Now people who donate today, we are working to replenish the supply to make sure blood is available in our community and for Vegas, and ensure that in case a tragedy like this or even a fraction of this happens somewhere else, that we are more than prepared to respond", Hummer said.

Join us for a special KREM 2 Blood Drive: Help to Las Vegas on Thursday.

You are encouraged to make an appointment on their website but walk-ins are accepted.

"In any situation where blood transfusions are needed, it's the blood already on the shelf that saves lives", said Steve Ferraiuolo, division president for United Blood Services Central Coast.

Blood from Colorado has not been sent to Las Vegas- yet. Uber is offering free rides to people who want to donate blood today. It can take 24 to 36 hours to collect, test, process and distribute blood where it's needed. "During a time of tragedy like this one, obviously there's a high volume of blood that's needed in a short amount of time and that quickly impacts the blood supply".

Donors that came in after learning about the shooting understood their blood may not leave the state but they're still motivated to help out those in need.

To be eligible to donate blood, you must be at least 18 years old (16 and 17 years old with parental consent), weigh 110 pounds or more and be in good health.
