GoPro Hero6 action camera debuts with 4K 60FPS visuals

Recording 4K videos on cameras and smartphones is becoming more common, but the capability to shoot with 60fps resolution is rare. In fact, the only smartphone that offers this feature is the latest iPhone 8, 8 Plus and iPhone X lineup.

Also note that the new Hero 6 Black is also capable of capturing videos at 2.7K at 120fps and at 1080p at 240fps.

Besides that, the HERO6 Black also features what GoPro says is the most advanced electronic image stabilisation ever on a HERO camera. The new hardware also add touch-zoom on the back so users can quickly focus in on details.

Besides frame rate, the new Hero6 Black also has faster Wi-Fi, now working on the 5GHz bands to speed up transfers. That will make it easier to control with the GoPro app and improve integration with the QuikStories feature, which automatically cuts together highlight reals. Powering the new device will be a custom designed GP1 chip that ensures the device always has the processing grunt to record all of the memorable moments of your adventures.

The new GoPro will cost $699 and it is bigger than one of the company's action cameras but fits in a pocket, and will go on sale in November and is still about 40% more expensive than the company's flagship action camera. GoPro states the new chip has been in development for three years and is a notable transition for the product line, which reports state was formerly powered by Ambarella chips.

"I think what's most exciting about GP1 is we've yet to tap its full potential".

While the Hero 6 may not look much different than the Hero 5, there's a lot new going on under the hood. Just like the earlier generations of the GoPro's the device offers a 10 language voice control feature. Its products include Cameras; Drone and image stabilization; Virtual reality; Mounts and accessories; Applications, and Services. In addition to high performance spherical capture for fully immersive VR experiences, Fusion's 5.2K resolution enables a new OverCapture creative solution that gives content creators the flexibility to produce conventional non-VR video and photos in HD-quality "punched out" from the spherically captured angles. Samsungs Gear 360 is now in its second edition (2017 Edition) and captures 360 degree images at 15MP (5,472 x 2,736 pixels) resolution and FullHD videos at 60fps.

If this all sounds rather standard nowadays, the GoPro Fusion does something quite distinct that should help set it apart from competition, "OverCapture". The idea behind OverCapture is letting user shoot first worry about framing their shots later. Initially, the feature will only be available for desktop.

Given its adventurous pedigree, the GoPro Fusion 360 is waterproof up to 16 feet deep and it is compatible with most GoPro mounts available in the market right now.

The GoPro Hero6 Black will release later this year for $499 (about £370, AU$640).
