When it comes to franchise value, the Detroit Lions rank below all but one organization in the NFL.

The Chiefs are the 24th most valuable team in the NFL, Forbes says.

The Dallas Cowboys are the most valuable team in the National Football League at $4.8 billion, according to Forbes. Much of that can be attributed to rights fees and new stadiums or stadium renovations.

The Cowboys have revenue of roughly $840 million and generated $350 million in profits, powered by merchandise sales and expanded business resulting from a new practice facility, according to Forbes. Owner Jerry Jones bought the franchise in 1989 for just under $150 million.

The Giants returned to the No. 3 spot with a $3.3 billion value (up 9 percent from previous year with $477 million in revenue). Forbes reported earlier this year that the average baseball franchise is worth $1.54 billion.

San Francisco ($3 billion) rounded out the teams worth at least $3 billion.

At $3.7 billion, the Patriots now tie the New York Yankees as the second most valuable team in the world.

The Atlanta Falcons, for example, led the league with a 16 percent increase after they reached the Super Bowl last season and then moved into Mercedes-Benz Stadium for this season. Rounding out the global top five, according to Forbes, is Manchested United ($3.69 billion) and FC Barcelona ($3.64 billion).
