Lascelles gives Newcastle third successive win

Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez has made three changes to his team for today's Premier League game at home to Stoke City, with Christian Atsu, DeAndre Yedlin and Chancel Mbemba all coming into the side in place of Jacob Murphy, Javier Manquillo and Jesus Gamez. They went on to finish 11th that season, but this Rafa Benitez side are flirting with the top four.

But manager Benitez was keeping his feet firmly on the ground as he celebrated a successful return to the dug-out.

"Hopefully the fans are enjoying and the team can carry on winning".

"We're doing okay after a tough period of fixtures".

Jamaal Lascelles was the hero once again for the Magpies by scoring the victor 68 minutes in after goals from Christian Atsu and Xherdan Shaqiri had the game on a knife's edge.

Without suspended striker Aleksandar Mitrovic, Newcastle looked to Joselu up front but the former Stoke forward squandered three chances to increase Newcastle's lead. "We had enough chances to manage the game better".

"It's about us learning and understanding when we play a team who will sit back".

It was Stoke's first loss in the league since an opening-day defeat by Everton. But obviously the right ball right on to his head, it's hard to defend under those circumstances.

"The fans, when you win so many games in a row, they are excited and thinking about Europe".

"But in the end, it wasn't to be".
