Elon Musk Shares First Glimpse Of A SpaceX Spacesuit

He said that the spacesuit has already been put to the test under double vacuum pressure.

The suit is stylish and simple, with Musk admitting that its "incredibly hard" to balance the look and its function.

In May past year, it was reported that Musk had commissioned Hollywood designer Jose Fernandez, who had worked on the Iron Man, Spider-Man, Batman, and Captain America costumes, to help create the spacesuit.

The Verge on Wednesday also pointed to similarities between apparent mockups of SpaceX suit designs and the image shared by Musk this week. There are also a few similarities with Boeing's own spacesuit, but it's worth noting that Boeing created it with the help of the David Clark Company.

The photo appears to confirm early photos rumoured to be the new SpaceX suit with the same colour scheme and minimalist design. "I didn't know what SpaceX was and I thought it was a film. I'm assuming it applies the pressure directly to the skin instead of pressurizing the suit with air like the current NASA suits?" Astronauts from NASA will wear these SpaceX suits for the commercial crew program. He teased more details about the suit in the days to come in the image's caption.

SpaceX's spacesuit has been developed in-house.

Under NASA's Commercial Crew Program, SpaceX is converting the Dragon spacecraft, which now carries cargo to and from the International Space Station every few months, to a vehicle than can transport humans. It's a notably different esthetic - bright blue material and mid-calf boots designed by Reebok.
