PGA Championship Leaderboard 2017: Updating Results and Standings for Thursday

PGA of America CEO Pete Bevacqua announced the long-discussed move Tuesday during a news conference at Quail Hollow, where the 99th PGA Championship begins Thursday.

The sun had barely peaked over the trees and hardly a breath of wind was detected when local North Carolinian Grayson Murray struck the first tee shot at 7:20 a.m. local time (1120 GMT).

A three-time major champion in a position to win a career grand slam already, Spieth says faith, family and golf are his top three priorities - in that order.

Japan's Hideki Matsuyama, coming off a victory last week at Akron after a final-round 61, also went birdie-birdie at 10 and 11, but stumbled back with a bogey at the par-4 12th hole.

From 1953 through this year (except 1971), the PGA's dates fell in either July or August, with the Masters and U.S. Open being the first two majors. "So we of course need to get through this week, but I would tell you we can't wait to get back here".

That couldn't be until 2024 at the earliest, given the PGA Championship sites are set for the next six years.

"He's a special guy", four-time major victor Ernie Els said. The more years you go on playing PGAs, and if I don't win one in the next 10 years then maybe there's added pressure then, and hopefully we don't have to have this conversation in 10 years.

Which is why it's hard to believe he says he won't put "added expectations or pressure" on himself this week at Quail Hollow as he attempts to become the youngest player to win a career grand slam. You can't really describe it, but it's there. In the final round before the Presidents Cup selections, he shot 62 while playing with Phil Mickelson, who told USA captain Fred Couples, "Dude, you've got to pick this guy".

Spieth is ready for the challenge of a course that has absorbed an inch of rain this week, giving long hitters an extra edge with balls plopping into fairways and holding on greens that might otherwise be lightning-fast.

Leading the afternoon wave will be world number four Rory McIlroy.

The 2016 US Open victor is playing this week at Quail Hollow, north of his hometown of Columbia, South Carolina. Only five other players have won all four modern majors - Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Nicklaus and Woods.

McIlroy, missing only the Masters to complete his own career Grand Slam, hasn't won a major since the 2014 PGA Championship. And he has shown skill in wet weather, notably at the 2011 US Open, where he won his first major.

Other names worth keeping an eye on include the Spaniard Jon Rahm, American's Justin Thomas and Daniel Berger, Englishman Paul Casey, and Belgian Thomas Pieters, who have all enjoyed decent seasons, and will no doubt each attract interest as they attempt to extend the first time major winners at USPGA to eight victors in nine years.
