'iPhone 8' to come in three colours and... short supply

The latest predictions, which come from renowned KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, cover the handsets' release window, colors, and features.

As rumors have suggested for months, Apple will launch three models of its new flagships, the standard iPhone 7s and 7s Plus we would normally expect to see, as well as a premium Organic Light Emitting Diode device, now being referred to as the iPhone 8. Kuo joined analysts in suspecting the iPhone 8 will have 3-D facial recognition, an edge-to-edge OLED display and a hefty price tag. The iPhone 8 is set to enter mass production mid-September and will launch alongside the iPhone 7s and 7s Plus, according to Kuo.

If Apple does plan on introducing the iPhone in just three hues this year, rose gold or the multiple shades of black that were available in the iPhone 7 will be gone.

That's also the month during which the trio should become available to buy, but the iPhone 8 will be in short supply at the beginning, with only 2-4 million units coming out by the end of September. Supply is expected to be constrained on the iPhone 8 through Q1 2018. However, the latter feature will be supported only with the use of a lightning to USB-C adapter.

If it can't nail that fingerprint technology under the screen, it may have to turn to the back, the most commonly used place for a fingerprint scanner. The Korean company is said to be the sole OLED display supplier for Apple. Meanwhile, there could be between 35 and 38 million iPhone 7s units and 18 to 20 million iPhone 7s Plus units in production. It will also have a totally new design. Kuo believes that the iPhone 8 will be the only model to ship with a vertical dual camera setup on the rear. Apart from the dongle for fast-charging, iPhone buyers might also have to invest in a wireless charger as the accessory will not come pre-bundled in the box.

I told you we're far from over in the "iPhone 8" saga.

Apple's tenth anniversary iPhone has been making headlines since the beginning of the year, and now that the launch date nears, the outline of what it will offer seems to get clearer by the day.
