Wife: Man who shot congressman wanted to work on tax policy

As we reported yesterday, Democrats in Congress have graciously reached out to Republicans, starting with praying for them Wednesday morning and joining them in prayer at the Congressional baseball game yesterday.

Representatives on both teams chose to go forward with the game, which got underway at 7 p.m.

Hodgkinson allegedly opened fire, wounding at least five people including House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.).

Sue Hodgkinson said she and James were married for nearly 30 years.

High-ranking Congressman Steve Scalise, R-Louisiana, was seriously injured and remains hospitalized. Before the game, all players bowed their heads for a moment of silence and prayer to honor Scalise.

Hodgkinson's weapons, a 9 mm handgun and a 7.62 mm caliber (.30-caliber) rifle, were recovered at the scene, according to a joint statement issued Thursday by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and several state and local law enforcement agencies.

But it's my hunch that Hodgkinson was not part of any broader movement.

"He wanted to go up there to work with people to change the tax brackets", she said.

"Today we come together as two organizations, putting aside politics, to make it explicitly clear that this is never tolerable", the statement read.

Hodgkinson, reportedly an avid supporter of and campaign volunteer for pro-abortion Sen. He has a big photo of Bernie Sanders on his Facebook page.

"I think he just fired the gun up in the air", Evanko said "At the time everybody wasn't so hot to trot on gun stuff".

"The. ways they could do that is you've ever been treated by a mental physician or in a mental hospital, or you've been convicted of a felony, or have been convicted of domestic battery", said Wagner.

Scalise sustained a single rifle shot to the left hip. While he is conscious and able to communicate through notes, the family says Mika requires medical equipment to breathe and will need additional surgeries.

The shooting occurred at a popular park and baseball complex where Republican lawmakers and others were gathered for a morning practice about 7 a.m.

"I can't believe he did this, I can't believe", she said, adding that her husband left for Washington in March, and she hadn't seen him since then.

Speaking before Central American leaders at a prosperity and security conference organized by the State Department and Homeland Security Department here, Pence said he and President Donald Trump were "deeply saddened" when they received the news Wednesday.

The wounded Capitol Police officers were identified as David Bailey, who was treated for a minor injury, and Crystal Griner, who was shot in the ankle. "An attack on one of us is an attack on all of us", House Speaker Paul Ryan said.

Trump later visited the hospital where Scalise was recovering.

Hodgkinson apparently wrote many letters to the editor of his local newspaper, the Belleville News-Democrat, which published almost two dozen of them between 2010 and 2012.
