2 girls, ages 7 and 13, shot outside South Side elementary school

Two girls were shot Friday afternoon near a school in the Calumet Heights neighborhood on the Far South Side. They were both taken to the hospital.

Police News Affairs said officers responded to a call of shots fired and "discovered two juveniles shot" outside the school. Johnson said the two girls were unintended victims who were shot by that gunfire.

The hospital says the girls' families have asked that no details about their conditions be released.

"Kids were out on a playground, enjoying their childhood, the end of the school year, having a barbecue and these gang bangers are out shooting other gang bangers with no regards to the consequences", Emanuel said.

Shortly after, police stopped a vehicle near the school they thought was linked to the shooting and questioned the occupants.

"We all hit the floor, it was a drive by", according to one witness. Possible offenders in custody, unconfirmed at this time.

The shooting occurred at Warren Elementary School in the 9200 block of South Jeffery Avenue, police said. Three "persons of interest" were taken into custody after they were stopped in a auto believed to be stolen.
