Trump makes hospital visit after congressional baseball shooting

The hospital tweeted late Wednesday that the congressman will require additional operations.

The gunman who wounded a top Republican congressman and several others during an early morning baseball practice had apparently been living out a white cargo van for months and was frequently seen working on a computer at a nearby YMCA, where he kept mostly to himself.

A gunman opened fire on Republican members of Congress during a baseball practice near Washington early on Wednesday, wounding several people including House of Representatives Majority Whip Steve Scalise before being taken into custody, police and witnesses said. A congressional staffer was also injured. He's been identified by law enforcement as 66-year old James Hodgkinson from the state of IL. His office said that before surgery for a wound in his hip he was in good spirits and spoke with his wife by telephone.

"He is grateful for the fearless actions of U.S. Capitol Police, first responders, and colleagues, ' they explained".

He said that it is known to all that GOP congressional baseball team practises at the field all the time.

Congressman Ryan released a stement on the shooting, saying he was "sickened" by it. Other victims included a members of Scalise's security detail, U.S. Capitol Police officer Crystal Griner, Zack Barthe, an aid to Rep. Roger Williams, R-Texas; and lobbyist Matt Mika. Two members of Congress said Hodgkins asked them whether the players on the field were Democrats or Republicans.

"The heroes are the police officers who attacked the shooter, and in doing so quite probably saved many, many lives".

The FBI is "exploring all angles" in the case, Special Agent in Charge Tim Slater said, responding to a question about whether the attack was an act of terrorism.

Members of congress and their staff went to a Virginia field to practice for a charity baseball tournament. The annual game has been played since 1909, and McSally said lawmakers applauded the announcement at an all-members meeting.

Williams said Barth was just one of many who showed bravery in the frightening moments.

Representative Brad Wenstrup held the same opinion about the significance of Scalise's presence at the event on Wednesday. Once they were able, Sen.

"I was at the home plate batting three minutes before then and I was getting ready to leave, sometimes I give senator Flake a ride home", Paul said.

Capitol Police Chief Matthew R. Verderosa praised his officers last night.

"We had nothing but baseball bats to fight back against a rifle with", Brooks said.

Representative Jeff Duncan indicated there might have been a political motive in the attack, saying that as he left the field the man who would later open fire approached him in the vehicle park.

Fleischmann estimated somewhere between 30-50 shots were fired.

The shooter was hit by gunshots from security, Brooks said in interviews, according to NBC Washington. He said he did so to ensure that Mrs. Scalise would not find out about the shooting through the media.

"The gun was a semiautomatic", Brooks said, adding that he was sure it was a rifle but unsure what kind.
