Lobo men's golf advance to NCAA Championship

Getting to the Finals wasn't an easy task for this talented Illini team. That focus is not aimed at the top of the standings, rather the cutline. A spot Illini golf is not accustomed to.

IL head coach Mike Small said it was Hardy that got his team ready to go coming into Wednesday.

With conditions the most hard the 13-team field had seen all week IL would post a 6-over 294, the best final round team score.

For the second day in a row, Doeden started to heat up after the turn.

Jacksonville, ranked 42nd in the country, made the biggest move in the final round, shooting a one-over 289 to tie Northwestern for fifth place, then knocking out the Wildcats in a playoff, keeping the team from playing almost home at the NCAA Championship at Rich Harvest Farms outside Chicago. Miller won the individual title by a three-stroke margin with a 54-hole total of 206 (-7), helping the No. 9 seed Nittany Lions finish ahead of four higher-ranked teams.

Hardy, who tied New Mexico's Andrej Bevins for medalist honors, recorded a 2-under 70 in the final round to help his team rally late and eventually finish in third place and earn the praise of his coach. Coach Mike Small was named Coach of the Year for the third consecutive season and the ninth time overall. "We got carless and selfish and did not play very well".

But the anchor all day was Nick Hardy. "He was not going to go down". Bailey's 64 also tied the second-best round in any event in program history and made him the sixth BU player to break 65 and the first since Ryan Baca in 2006.

"I sent the guys a text telling them Illini golf always finds a way no matter what". That came in 2004 here at the Kampen Course.

Two teams, Baylor and Oklahoma State won its respective Regional. The Rebels would finish fourth in that event, but the experience was much more valuable.

"I'm really excited to play in this tournament", Soo said.

Conditions saw winds gusting close to 30 miles per hour on Wednesday afternoon. UNLV, Auburn, Illinois, New Mexico and Purdue all advanced as teams.

"This golf course is such a great test".

Lobo senior Andrej Bevins finished in a tie on top of the individual leader board with Nick Hardy of IL.

"His leadership last night after the round and the way he spoke to the media and the way he handled practice after the round and the way he went out and played today was, I told the team, that was inspirational to see that and to take them on his shoulders and do what he did", Small said.
