Since the US-led coalition began to take back territory from the Islamic State group, more than 200,000 people have been reportedly displaced from the Iraqi city of Mosul. It says the crematorium is being used to hide evidence of the extent of the killings.

Dawn air strikes on a Syrian border town in the Islamic State-held eastern province of Deir al-Zor killed 23 people, a lot of them civilians, a war monitoring group said on Monday.

The U.N. envoy for Syria says a government delegation attending peace talks in Geneva is "here to work", sidestepping comments by President Bashar Assad that the U.N. -mediated peace talks are just for show.

"They sent large reinforcements of artillery, tanks and armored vehicles", said mayor Issam al-Reis, a representative of the so-called group of the southern front related to the Western-backed rebel group "Free Syrian army". Activists blamed the USA -led coalition, which responded to an Associated Press query by saying it would look into the reports, AP said.

The deaths came after 12 women were killed in a strike by the USA -led coalition fighting ISIS in the east of Syria's Raqqa province Sunday, the Syrian Observatory for Human Right said.

Deir al-Zor province links territory ISIS controls in Syria and Iraq. Observatory director Rami Abdurrahman says IS fighters were also killed.

The US military said in May that coalition strikes in Syria and Iraq had "unintentionally" killed 352 civilians since it launched operations against IS in 2014.

The Islamic State-linked media outlet Amaq said coalition strikes killed 15 people and wounded 35 others in Al-Bukamal.

Syrian opposition activists and media say Kurdish-led forces are closing in on the de-facto capital of the Islamic State group in Syria, seizing a cotton factory only a couple of miles north of the city.

A US-backed alliance of Kurdish and Arab fighters known as the Syrian Democratic Forces is battling towards Raqqa, IS's most important remaining Syrian bastion. It said another 25 civilians were killed in Boukamal.
