Trump Casts Steely Eye on H-1B Visa Program

It will become harder for Indians to get H-1B visa as the United States President Donald Trump will sign on Tuesday an executive order to direct the federal agencies asking them to recommend changes in the temporary visa programme that is used to hire foreign employees to the USA for filling the high-skilled jobs.

"This executive order will call for the strict enforcement of all laws governing entry into the United States of labor from overseas for the stated objective of creating higher wages and higher employment rates for workers in the United States", the official said.

"We hope the goal of President Trump's executive order on the H-1B program is 'mend it, don't end it, ' said Robert Atkinson, president of the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation, a think tank that is lobbying in favor of the visas, in a statement".

The review may wreck several of the many programs used to import a population of perhaps 1.8 million foreign temporary workers for a huge variety of U.S.

The Trump administration can do a few things on its own. And his businesses have hired foreign workers, including at his Palm Beach club Mar-a-Lago. The Department of Labor signed off on that request, according to the paper.

"And, so only five per cent were categorised at the highest wage tier of the four wage tiers that are in place for the H-1B guest-worker visa", the official said. During the campaign Trump defended his use of foreign workers, saying it's hard to find Americans willing to accept seasonal employment.

The Palm Beach Post in December reported Trump will be hiring foreign workers for Mar-a-Lago, many at or below the same rate those jobs were paid previous year, despite wage growth and increased membership fees.

"We have to get the health care taken care of", Trump said. You know, are companies like Tata (TCS), Infosys, Cognizant.

And he wasn't looking to hire locals, even though there are well over 1000 people registered with a career services agency in the area looking for those jobs. "Because the way, sometimes, companies like us get characterised is very different from the reality of what we bring to the table", Gopinathan, who is in his mid-40s, told PTI. "But if you look at all of the other places in Palm Beach, they're all doing exactly the same thing", he said.

A total of 78 foreign workers that Trump could pay less than the market rate.

The order calls for a review of the H-1B visa program for the purposes of reforming it. Trump Vineyard Estates, now run and owned by the president's son, Eric Trump. He was critical of the H-1B program during his election. The Department of Labor requires that employers using this program show that they were unable to fill their seasonal needs with domestic workers. Although the memo doesn't have the force of law and is merely intended as guidance for employees reviewing individual cases, it could make it more hard for entry-level workers to get approved.

President Donald Trump is expected to sign a new executive order Tuesday (18 April) that will target guest worker visas and will push for policies prioritising American-made products.

At Trump Model Management, H-1B visas were used for some of the foreign-born models. Organizations say they use visas to recruit the best ability.

"Right now H-1B visas are awarded by random lottery and many of you will be surprised to know that about 80% of H-1B workers are paid less than the median wage in their fields".

Trump has targeted the H-1B program, claiming they are a source of cheap labor. Firms have argued that foreign workers are brought in not to save money but to take on seasonal or specialized jobs that can not otherwise be filled.

"But I think during the campaign the president addressed this at length".

Indian nationals are the largest group of recipients of the H-1B visas issued each year.
