Coffee Memorial Blood Center Holiday Blood Drive

The holiday season is hard because regular donors are traveling, kids are out of school, relatives are visiting and therefore, they are not as available to come in to donate. As a thank you for donating around the Thanksgiving holiday, all those who come to donate November 24-28 will be invited to download a set of recipes from celebrity chefs. Many of these blood donors do not give during the summer months and the winter holidays when school is not in session, and when blood shortages can occur.

The Red Cross encourages donors to start a new holiday tradition and bring family and friends together to donate blood or platelets. The Blood Center is based in Davenport, Iowa, where MVRBC's testing, processing and primary distribution center produces transfusable blood component products from more than 200,000 whole blood and platelet apheresis donations each year.

"Everyone wants to come out and help and we are very, very appreciative and we will need all blood types, but right now we are trying to fast-track O negative", she reminded donors.

The need for donors increases at this time of year for a number of reasons, but primarily because people are busy with seasonal activities and less likely to donate, Chabert said. All blood types are needed.

To be eligible to donate blood, you must be at least 18 years old (17 or 16 years old with parental consent), weigh 110 pounds or more and be in good health.
