BBC study: Price of watching Premier League falling

More than 1,000 tickets in six categories have been looked at - the cheapest and most expensive matchday, cheapest and most expensive season tickets and cheapest and most expensive away tickets.

The latest "Cost of Football" survey by the BBC has revealed that Shefffield Wednesday are one of the most expensive teams to support in the Football League.

This year they have declined to take part.

Junior and adult shirt prices have been increased by 3% over the past year and now average £34.66 and £45.50 respectively.

Supporters at both Hull and Liverpool staged protests over some ticketing issues last season but those clubs, along with Manchester City, reduced their cheapest matchday prices.

More long-term fans fare a great deal better, with the Hornets' cheapest season ticket, priced £385, down in mid-table obscurity, with eight clubs letting people secure their seat for a smaller outlay.

However, the average in the cheapest away ticket category has fallen by 9% to £20.98 since previous year.

Albion's most expensive (£509) is meanwhile nearly £380 cheaper than the Premier League average of £886.33.

Prices for single matchday tickets at the Hawthorns were also frozen for this season.

The Football Supporters' Federation has vowed to keep campaigning for cheaper ticket prices. This sustained effort from supporters has delivered real progress such as the £30 cap on away ticket prices in the Premier League.

But this has turned attention to the Championship, where the average cost to away fans has risen to £31.57, while the FSF is also unhappy with general season-ticket prices.

In Europe, Barcelona's cheapest season ticket is 132 euro (£114).

Everton still come in favorably on multiple cost centres, like season tickets and the matchday experience.

If you're looking for a cheap day out in the Premier League - including the traditional pie, programme and polystyrene cup of tea - Vicarage Road is not the place to go, a new survey has found. Bournemouth and Burnley are the cheapest at £40.

The survey also showed the cost of replica shirts is still rising, and that West Ham sell the most expensive pies at £4.10.

Ipswich offer the most expensive season ticket in the division at £842 - more than the most expensive season ticket at 12 Premier League clubs.

Our matchday programmes are priced at £3, with the price ranging from £3 to £4 across the league, while the price of a pie at the KCOM Stadium (£3.10) falls below the league average with a cup of tea 3p above the league average at £2.10. Sixteen clubs have increased their pie prices this season.
